Getting Started
Do I need to download an app?+
No! RiddleWalk runs entirely through WhatsApp. If you have WhatsApp on your phone, you're ready to go.
How do I start a walk?+
Choose a walk on our website, complete payment, and you'll receive a WhatsApp message within seconds. Message "Ready to begin" when you're at the starting area and your first clue will arrive.
Can I play alone or with friends?+
Both! You can play solo or walk the route with friends. One person manages the WhatsApp game and everyone collaborates on solving the riddles together.
What do I need to bring?+
Just your phone with WhatsApp and a charged battery. Comfortable shoes are a must — you'll be walking for 2–3 hours. An external battery pack is handy for longer routes.
During the Walk
How do the clues work?+
Each riddle describes your next destination without naming it. Solve the riddle to figure out where to go. When you arrive, send your answer and — if correct — you'll get a fun fact about the location and the next riddle.
What if I get stuck?+
You have 3 hint lifelines for the entire walk. Type HINT at any time and you'll get a nudge in the right direction. Hints reduce your score progressively — the first costs 30%, two hints costs 55%, and all three costs 75% of that clue's points. Use them wisely.
Can I pause and continue later?+
Yes! Type PAUSE to take a break. Your session is saved and you can resume where you left off by typing RESUME. Your timer keeps running though, so don't pause too long if you want a top leaderboard spot.
What if I want to stop early?+
No problem. Type FORFEIT and we'll send you the remaining route with Google Maps links so you can still enjoy the walk. Your progress is recorded as a DNF (Did Not Finish).
Can I skip a clue?+
Yes — type SKIP to move to the next clue. You'll get zero points for a skipped clue, but we'll reveal the answer so you still learn something.
How does the narrator work?+
Each walk has a themed AI narrator who guides you through the experience — Inspector Blackwood for Blood & Fog, Sir Reginald Pemberton for Crown & Country, The Cartographer for The City Beneath, and so on. They stay in character and make the experience feel immersive.
Locations & Safety
Are the locations safe?+
All routes go through well-known, public areas with good foot traffic. We recommend playing during daylight hours for the best experience.
Can I play at night?+
Some walks are designed for it — Velvet & Vice and Two by Twilight are best after dark. Others work great during the day. Check the walk description for our recommendation.
What if I can't find a location?+
The riddle IS the navigation — that's the challenge. If you're truly stuck, use a hint lifeline. The hints are designed to point you in the right direction without spoiling the discovery.
Is the route wheelchair accessible?+
Our routes follow public pavements and streets. Most stops are accessible, but some historic areas may have uneven surfaces or steps. Contact us for specific route accessibility details.
Scoring & Leaderboards
How is scoring calculated?+
Each clue has a base point value (usually 100). Answer quickly for a time bonus (+100 under 30s, scaling down to +0 after 3 minutes). Hints reduce your score progressively — the first costs 30%, two costs 55%, and all three costs 75%. Wrong guesses deduct 15 points each. Correct streaks earn a multiplier up to 1.5x. Your final score and completion time determine your leaderboard position.
Can I replay a walk?+
You can, but since you'll know the answers, it's more fun to try a different route! Your original score stays on the leaderboard.
How do leaderboard rankings work?+
Players are ranked by total score, then by time (faster is better for tiebreakers). The leaderboard is live — you might get knocked down a spot if someone beats your score!
Payment & Pricing
How much does a walk cost?+
Each walk is £9.99 per player. That includes everything — all clues, hints, the AI narrator, fun facts, and leaderboard access.
What payment methods do you accept?+
We use Stripe for secure payments. You can pay with credit/debit card, Apple Pay, or Google Pay.
Is it refundable?+
If you haven't started the walk (haven't messaged "Ready to begin"), contact us for a full refund. Once started, refunds are handled case by case.
Technical
What phone do I need?+
Any smartphone with WhatsApp installed — iPhone or Android. The game is text-based, so even older phones work fine.
How much mobile data does it use?+
Very little — it's just WhatsApp text messages. A full walk uses less data than loading a single webpage.
What if WhatsApp goes down?+
If there's a WhatsApp outage, your session is saved. Just resume when the service is back. Your timer will still be running, but we account for unusual delays.
